Old Church Ruins

historical

The Old Church Ruins in Catarman, Camiguin, also known as the Gui-ob Church, were built by Spanish missionaries in the late 16th century using coral stones to serve as a place of worship for early settlers. The church was heavily damaged by the eruptions of Mount Vulcan between 1871 and 1875, which caused earthquakes and land subsidence that destroyed much of the old town. Today, its remaining stone walls stand as a historic landmark, reflecting Camiguin’s colonial past and the natural disasters that shaped the island.

Today, the Gui-ob Church Ruins are protected as a heritage site and are fenced to preserve their structure, allowing visitors to safely explore and appreciate the historic walls made of coral stones. The area is quiet and scenic, making it a popular stop for tourists, photographers, and history lovers, and it is often included in heritage and countryside tours around Catarman and the rest of Camiguin.
